It’s Your Holiday – But It’s Our Home

You’ve seen it on postcards. You’ve probably dreamt of going. But what happens when thousands of people dream of the same place at once?

In Santorini, locals hung a quiet sign near the cliffs of Oia:

It’s your holiday – but it’s our home.

It’s a reminder that behind every iconic photo, there’s a community living with the consequences of overtourism – water shortages, sky-high rents, and streets too crowded to breathe.

And it’s not just Santorini. From Venice to Barcelona, Dubrovnik to Amsterdam, parts of Europe are struggling to cope with the sheer weight of mass tourism. What started as “traveling to experience the world” is now putting the world’s most beautiful places at risk of becoming unlivable – for both locals and travelers.

Crowds of tourists taking photos of the sunset in Oia, Santorini, gathered in front of whitewashed buildings with blue domes. The image illustrates the scale of overtourism and connects to the post’s theme about how mass tourism affects local life.

This page is not about guilt. It’s about curiosity. About asking better questions.

About exploring the world with care, context, and respect.

Because the way we travel matters.

Welcome to this space. Let's wander wisely.

T.
